This text teaches Visual Basic 6 from the ground up, and assumes no prior background in programming.


No detail overlooked. As with all Gaddis texts, this book explains details that others overlook. For example, most texts don't go this far in explaining the difference between modal and modeless forms.


  • Tutorials: Each chapter has several hands-on tutorials that reinforce the chapter's topics.
  • Concept statements: A concept statement that briefly and succinctly states the key concept being presented introduces each major section.
  • Notes appear frequently throughout the text. They are short explanations of interesting or often misunderstood points relevant to the topic at hand.
  • Tips appear regularly that advise the student on the best techniques for approaching different programming problems.
  • Checkpoints: These are questions designed to quickly test a student's understanding of a recent topic. They are placed at intervals throughout each chapter. An appendix gives the correct answer for each checkpoint, so students may gauge their own progress.
  • Warnings are notes that caution the student about certain features, programming techniques, or practices that can lead to hard-to-find errors, malfunctioning programs or loss of data.
  • If You Want to Know More sections. Theses sections go into greater detail about VB features. Since they are easily identifiable, you can pick the ones you want to use in your class, and the ones you want to skip.
